Generative Artificial Intelligence in Writing

Allessandra Elisabeth dos Santos, Paulo Boa Sorte, Luciana C. de Oliveira · 2025

Acknowledging the presence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and other technological tools in education is essential since schools are impacted by changes in society. Among the various social practices integrated into our daily lives, writing is a technology that allows us to participate critically in ongoing discourses and share knowledge across diverse communities. Incorporating GenAI in educational practices scaffolds writing development and fosters collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking for multilingual learners. Therefore, it prepares them to navigate and contribute meaningfully in an increasingly interconnected, AI-driven world. As an AI-text generator technology, ChatGPT performs tasks based on prompts, responds to commands automatically, but does not formulate questions. This book chapter introduces the Prompt Creation Reference Chart , which guides the development of well-structured prompts by considering the author’s background, the characteristics of the request, and the purpose of the prompt. This framework fosters effective human-AI interaction and enhances students’ ability to refine their writing through iterative feedback from ChatGPT. This integration is promoted by posing significant inquiries, which lead to a meaning-making process used to achieve social goals. Writing as a social practice is not simply a matter of completing sentences, summarizing, and translating texts. The challenge is: who will pose issues that really matter to humanity? After asking questions and seeking answers, students develop collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
