Generative AI and the Writing Center

This chapter explores the use of generative AI in writing centers, emphasizing its potential for tutor development and student success. We suggest that writing center administrators can incorporate AI into their workflow to design professional development opportunities for tutors and staff. Specifically, we discuss: (1) how AI necessitates reconsidering the essential skills for effective tutoring; and (2) how AI tools could potentially help to alleviate the labor and stresses of training design and delivery, while still maximizing applicability and usefulness when used ethically. We conclude with examples of hands-on, dialogic training approaches to familiarize tutors with AI to foster their continuous professional growth.
