AI-Powered Reading Assistants

M.H. Watkins · 2025

This chapter presents findings from a spring 2023 pilot that built upon a previous 2022 study, using AI-powered reading assistants, such as ExplainPaper and SciSpace, to support first-year writing students in their close reading skills. The chapter analyzes student reflections on the effectiveness of AI reading assistants, the challenges of integrating AI assistance in the classroom, and pedagogical bias related to the perceived loss of critical thinking and close reading skills. AI reading assistants can be effective in supporting first-year writing students, particularly those with reading comprehension difficulties or who are non-native speakers. However, the pilot also identified several challenges to integrating AI assistance in the classroom, including technical, ethical, and practical concerns. Yet, the initial reflective feedback from students indicates the benefits of carefully employing AI reading assistants outweigh the potential drawbacks when implemented thoughtfully and with appropriate teaching and learning strategies. The study also addresses the pedagogical bias against AI assistance, arguing that AI reading assistants can be used to support critical thinking and close reading skills when used effectively.
