A Comprehensive Survey of Lightweight Authentication Mechanisms for Vehicle Group Communication in 5G Networks

Satish Kumar Rajbhar, Samayveer Singh · 2025

High-speed and ultra-low latency communication enabled by 5G technology will change vehicular network programs which demand robust group authentication to protect V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communications against cyberattacks. This survey reviews state-of-the-art lightweight authentication protocols for 5G vehicular applications showing technology that stands out due to its security, scalability, and efficiency. ECC, chaotic maps and dynamic key management are some important techniques, but they can provide mutual authentication with low computational load. The survey compares these protocols based on speed, privacy, and resource usage to reveal two aspects: (1) challenges of each protocol for which no solutions exist together with the suitable whistle-blowing sponsors towards 5G vehicular networks, and (2) possible paths that may be considered as solutions for scalable secured group authentication.
