TCP Pacing Without Clock-Based Timing Control for Data Segment Transmission

Toshihiko Kato, Ryo Yamamoto, Satoshi Ohzahata · 2024

The rate based segment transmission control becomes important along with the increasing bandwidth of communication links. However, most of the pacing procedures for sending data segments in a fixed rate are supported by clock-based timing control, and the clock based software pacing requires heavy processing cost in commodity computers. There are some proposals which do not rely on clocks, but they assume a specific network interfaces. This paper proposes a new TCP pacing scheme which does not use any clock-based timing control, and which does not assume any specific network interfaces. It uses the ACK reception timings even in the slow start phase and expands the data transmission interval by waiting for multiple ACK reception. The performance evaluation through the network simulator shows that our proposal avoids packet losses in a high bandwidth and long delay network.
