Transients in Systems with Shunt Capacitors
Luiz Cera Zanetta Jr. · 2025
During the switching of shunt-capacitor banks, both overvoltages and high currents can occur. The shunt-capacitor switching analysis in this chapter primarily focuses on high-frequency transients such as energization, restrike, back-to-back switching, and inrush currents. The main transients caused by shunt capacitors are analyzed using elementary single and three-phase circuits, noting that, despite their simplicity, these calculations often provide a good degree of accuracy. More complex cases requiring EMTP evaluation, such as circuit breaker restrikes during shunt-capacitor switching and the intervention of surge arresters, are also addressed. An analysis of high-frequency stresses on equipment caused by shunt-capacitor switching is conducted, introducing the main considerations for equipment specification.
