Content integration at the beginning level

William J. Comer · 2025

While interest in content-based instruction has grown enormously since the 1980s in post-secondary foreign language programs, and a wide variety of content-based courses and program types have been created, there still is no model for how to integrate content into a language course at the beginning level. This chapter reviews various attempts at content integration at that level and argues that in place of true content-based instruction at the beginning level, it may be enough to structure a course around a consistent storyline that includes cultural and real-world learning. The storyline of the course textbook can serve as the content for discussion while also providing the main language input for learners. Two sample exercises are analyzed in detail to show how the textbook’s plot can provide the context and content for a structured input approach to learning grammatical forms and constructions.
