Stefani Boutelier, Sarah J. Donovan · 2025

This chapter explores the integration of digital literacies in English Language Arts (ELA) classrooms, aligning with the NCTE&s;s 2018 beliefs on technology use. It emphasizes that literacy now encompasses various forms, including digital, visual, and artificial intelligence (AI) literacies, reflecting the dynamic, multimodal nature of contemporary communication. The chapter highlights the importance of considering literacy before technology, urging educators to prioritize pedagogical goals and ethical considerations in digital environments. By examining e-Poetry and digital platforms, the chapter illustrates how technology can enhance creativity, critical thinking, and student engagement. Additionally, it addresses the non-neutrality of technology, emphasizing equity, access, and digital ethics in the classroom. The chapter encourages educators to embrace multimodal and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Educator Standards to further humanize digital learning, ensuring that technology supports meaningful, inclusive, and responsible teaching practices in the ELA classroom.
