Sensor data from Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be routinely collected, analyzed, and utilized in the cloud. However, the communication throughput and latency required for various services must be maintained while collecting IoT data from mobile environments. IoT communication involves a large amount of small-scale data streaming, necessitating efficient transmission methods tailored to the communication environment. This study investigated data compression processes by considering IoT data communication. Lossless compression is applied for JSON data, a commonly used data format in IoT communication. Lossy compression is used for image data because lossless compression is rarely effective. Experiments indicate that selecting an algorithm that considers the balance between compression/decompression time and compression ratio is important, and that the calculation model makes it possible to predict the communication time by applying the compression process for each data size and compression algorithm. Additionally, for JPEG data, we confirmed that lower compression quality reduces compression time.
