Metaverse technologies are growing rapidly and come with unprecedented cybersecurity challenges that cut beyond any traditional digital context. Researchers have thoroughly researched virtual worlds and their cybersecurity, but the metaverse’s ongoing digital identities, integrated economies, and immersive social interactions have prompted a need to rethink and reformulate current security paradigms. How can the metaverse become a testing field as well as an implementation platform for advanced cybersecurity practices? To analyze metaverse-based security simulations, we applied a mixed-methods approach that involved quantitative analysis of 2,500 simulated attack scenarios and qualitative assessment of 150 expert interviews in 12 countries. Findings show that metaverse security simulations outperform traditional testing environments by up to 47% in terms of threat detection rate, especially when detecting complex, multi-vector attacks. The study also found that immersion visualization of network threats in the metaverse showed a notable improvement in incident response times (34%) and team collaboration in security operations centers. Therefore, summarizing our conclusion, the metaverse uniquely provides advantageous opportunities for training in cybersecurity, threat visualization, and real-time response coordination while introducing new vectors of attacks with innovative protection strategies. Such results have far-reaching implications regarding the future of cybersecurity training and operational security management in increasingly immersive digital environments.
