The recent digitalization of the healthcare industry brought new challenges related to secure, efficient and interoperable Electronic Health Record systems. Traditional systems of EHR management are unable to guarantee the appropriate level of privacy, security and interoperability that leads to numerous inefficiencies and high the data breach rates. For this reason, below system envisions the role of blockchain in revolutionizing the existing systems of EHR management. The flaw of blockchain’s immutability and the functionality of smart contracts are introduced as the two key components that can lead to a significant improvement in terms of data security and patient privacy, as well as can promote the effective sharing of patient’s data across different healthcare institutions. This paper is based on a comprehensive review of the relevant literature on the matter and the examination of the existing blockchain-based systems for EHR management. In particular, the paper provides key benefits and challenges associated with this model. As the result, the paper demonstrates that blockchain has a great potential for EHR management, yet its implementation requires careful consideration of all technical, legal and organizational aspects. Thus, the system proposed in this paper serves as a contribution to the existing knowledge on healthcare innovation and provides a good example of how the blockchain technology can be utilized for transforming the system of EHR management.
