Design of a software-defined radio (SDR) system for real-time signal processing in cognitive radio networks using GNU radio

Mikael Laine · International Journal of Electrical and Data Communication · 2025

The rapid expansion of wireless communication systems and the scarcity of available spectrum have driven the development of cognitive radio networks (CRNs), which enable dynamic spectrum access. At the heart of CRNs lies Software-Defined Radio (SDR), a technology that allows for flexible and reconfigurable communication systems. This paper presents the design of an SDR system for real-time signal processing within CRNs, utilizing GNU Radio, an open-source SDR framework. We detail the key components of the SDR system, the design principles for real-time signal processing, and the integration of SDR with cognitive radio functionalities. Our proposed system supports adaptive spectrum management and interference mitigation, offering insights into the implementation and performance evaluation of the system in real-time environments.
