Minimizing Disruptions in Low-Latency Streaming with Latency Dependent Intra-segment Response

Piers O’Hanlon · 2025

We introduce our novel Latency Dependent Intra-segment Response (LDIR) algorithm, which integrates per-chunk timers with a time-based request abandonment strategy to rapidly adapt to changing bandwidth conditions. When applied to the default ABR algorithm in dash.js, our approach eliminates stalling in some scenarios and achieves up to a 95% reduction in median stall duration, while reducing the number of stalls by up to 90% with dynamic network conditions. It provides significantly improved latency adherence while improving overall quality of experience (QoE). We also demonstrate LDIR's benefits for the other two low latency algorithms in dash.js. Furthermore, we elucidate some important configuration changes and bug fixes we discovered to improve the performance of dash.js.
