Identity in the Metaverse

Scott Shackelford, Michael Mattioli, Jeffrey Prince, João Marinotti · 2025

Abstract Through their avatars, metaverse users are meant to embody their true, personal, and multidimensional identities. As the primary means through which users interact with the Metaverse and the primary means through which others perceive and interact with users, digital avatars can be true embodiments of individual identity. Furthermore, the digital nature of virtual avatars allows users to experiment with their self-expression, serving as a valuable tool for freedom, growth, and self-exploration. Thus, the Metaverse presents an opportunity to transcend traditional physical limitations, which allows for a more accessible and expressive digital environment. Given the nuances of personhood, however, it is not surprising that the Metaverse will continue to face challenges in its attempts to translate personal identity into the virtual environment. Corporate failures to respect diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Metaverse and the difficulties created by online anonymity are just two examples of the challenges that lie ahead.
