The first point is that my title is not ‘Linguistics and Computer Speech Understanding ’. The more I try to understand what it means for a machine to understand, the less I understand. Whatever machine understanding is, machine recognition of speech must be a part of it, may even be a precursor of it, so it’s there that I want to begin.
