Image Coding of Natural and Light Field Images: A Tutorial

Mohd Tausif, Ekram Khan · IETE Journal of Education · 2025

The objective of this tutorial is to describe the necessity of compression in natural and Light field (LF) images. The fundamental approach of compression along with the details of some state-of-the-art coding approaches are also presented in this work. LF images have exceptional features that the parameters, such as the focus and depth of field, can be modified even after capturing the scene. However, the high-dimensionality data associated with LF image are a major hindrance in implementing it in resource-constraint environments. The coding of LF images results in reduced memory requirement for storage and smaller bandwidth for transmission. We advise that the research should be done on more diverse datasets and the details of implementation along with codes should be made publicly available. Finally, this work illustrates open challenges in the field and frames interesting future research directions.
