Software development is a complex process. This chapter delves into Object-Oriented analysis (OOA), a powerful approach that helps break down this complexity. It begins by contrasting the traditional structured approach with the Object-Oriented approach, highlighting their unique strengths. Unified modeling language (UML), a visual notation tool for software development, is introduced with the main focus on UML use case diagrams, a crucial tool for capturing the functionality of a system from the user’s perspective. The different components of these diagrams, like actors, use cases, and related associations, are discussed in depth to elicit the interactions between users and the system. Moving beyond the visual representation, the chapter dives into crafting clear and concise use case descriptions, which provide detailed narratives of user interactions, ensuring a well-defined system scope. Through comprehensive explanations and examples, this chapter aims to equip readers with the necessary skills to effectively utilize UML use case diagrams in OOA.
