Women journalists and online harassment

Susana Sampaio‐Dias, María João Silveirinha, João Manuel Santos de Miranda · 2025

Worldwide, women journalists are often subjected to discrimination and misogynistic abuse while carrying out their professional duties. This chapter represents an explorative study of the mechanisms by which human rights laws can be employed to support and protect women journalists operating in online contexts. It delves into the nuanced and multifaceted responsibilities of various stakeholders, including governments, online platforms, and news organisations, in ensuring the safety and well-being of women journalists. The chapter discusses legal frameworks, the emotional impact of online harassment on journalists, and some existing informal initiatives developed to face the issue, as well as the challenges that arise in the pursuit of safeguarding the rights of women journalists in online environments.
