The necessity of cognitive radio network increases due to the growing demand of wireless devices in today's time. This gives rise to the efficient use of spectrum of the cognitive radio system. This paper examines the spectrum efficiency optimization of multi-user single relay cognitive radio system. Since the data packets from secondary users collide each other in a cognitive radio network, this results in the reduction of the spectrum efficiency of the systems. In this paper a spectrum efficiency model for the multi-user cognitive radio network has been developed. The model developed here makes it convenient to formulate optimization problem in such a way that the spectrum efficiency can be optimized by maintaining the collision probability within the allowable limit. As a result of this an improvement in the spectrum efficiency is obtained by preserving the reliability of the system in the cognitive radio network (CRN). The spectrum efficiency optimization of the multiuser cognitive radio network is carried out using optimization techniques like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Human behavior based Particle Swarm Optimization (HPSO), Aging Leader and Challengers Particle Swarm Optimization (ALCPSO). The results of the simulation shows that, the ALCPSO based optimised systems delivers higher spectrum efficiency in comparison to the other optimisation methods.
