3D CAD File Types and Transfers

This chapter describes some of the most common formats and file types that are used for sharing computer-based models. It includes neutral file formats and vendor-specific formats. 2D formats in layered in structured forms are outlined. 3D formats described include boundary representation and mesh-based models. Common formats used include JT, STEP, IGES, QIF, 3D PDF, Parasolid, ACIS, DWG/DXF, STL and OBJ. The chapter concludes with some of the most common problem areas and potential solutions encountered when sharing CAD data.
