The science of quantum computing is expanding quickly and has the potential to completely transform a variety of sectors. Quantum computing is able to perform certain calculations exponentially quicker than traditional computers by utilizing the superposition and quantum entanglement aspects of quantum mechanics. This chapter will give a summary of the fundamentals of quantum computing, comprising the concepts of qubits, superposition, entanglement, and quantum algorithms. The chapter will also discuss some of the obstacles that must be removed before using quantum computing can become a reality, such as error correction, scaling, and application development. The final section of the chapter will examine the possible uses of quantum computing in fields including materials science, drug research, cryptography, and finance.
