The main roles of antioxidants are the protection of cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Freeradicals are extremely reactive molecules, which causes cell damage to structural components, includingproteins, lipids, and DNA. There exists an imbalance in free radical formation over the body's capacity toneutralize free radicals. Several chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, andneurodegenerative disorders, are implicated in such an imbalance. In vitro antioxidant activity assays can beconsidered inevitable tools in evaluating the potential of natural and synthetic compounds against oxidativedamage and in the scope of their therapeutic use.
