Contemporary Composers
Rachel Schutz · 2025
Wales has a vast number of talented and highly successful living composers writing for the voice today. Their stylistic approaches vary widely from crossover, neoromantic, and minimalist idioms to nontonal, aleatoric, and electroacoustic approaches. This chapter features 13 prominent composers, listed in chronological order, and their art songs, choral works, and operas. Composers include Brian Hughes, Rhian Samuel, John Metcalf, Hilary Tann, Eric Jones, Gareth Glyn, John Hardy, Robat Arwyn, Pwyll ap Siôn, Guto Pryderi Puw, Paul Mealor, Huw Watkins, and Nathan James Dearden. After providing a biographical and stylistic background on each composer, this chapter offers a very selected catalogue of their art songs, choral works, and operas (as appropriate), along with commentary and analysis. The chapter ends with a list of additional composers of note.
