Analysis and Design of Continuous-Time Filters
Oktay Alkin · 2025
Chapter 6 focuses on the application of the material presented so far to the analysis and design of continuous-time filters. The concept of distortionless transmission is explained, and rules for ideal filter behavior are established. Filter design through experimental placement of poles and zeros of the system function is discussed in order to create intuition about the relationship between pole and zero locations and filter behavior. Methods for analog lowpass filter design using Butterworth, Chebyshev, inverse Chebyshev and elliptic approximation functions are given. Finally, transformation functions for converting lowpass filters to other filter types are derived. MATLAB exercises for the chapter deal with the use of built in functions for designing Butterworth, Chebyshev and elliptic filters, transformations from low pass to other filter types, and the use of second-order sections.
