Research on Subject Groups in pre-Classical and Classical Period Keyboard Sonata

The two themes, or the two subjects in the sonata form, usually are the objects, which be researched by Musicologists. They usually discuss them in terms of mode or tonality, characteristics, comparison and preparation of before and after materials and so on. This article will not only discuss these aspects, but also focus on the subjects' length. Different musicologists hold different views on the length of the subject groups in sonata form. Therefore, this article will conduct some case studies which from pre-Classical to Classical period keyboard sonata, from Domenico Scarlatti to Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and obtains statistical data. Based on the obtained data, confirm or falsify the existing theories and viewpoints on the length of subject groups in sonata form, and leads to a more reasonable conclusion.
