Suresh Merugu, Rajesh Yadav, Herbert Raj Perianayagam, George Ghinea · IET conference proceedings. · 2025

This paper presents a novel solution aimed at addressing the functional limitations experienced by visually impaired individuals through the development of a secure smart assistive device. It identifies and resolves common challenges such as object recognition, identification of packaged goods, currency coins and notes, text reading, and facial recognition encountered by this community. The proposed solution comprises an augmented reality wearable spectacle integrated with a smart vision system worn on the head. The spectacle is equipped with essential components including a camera, earphones, GPS module, and Internet connectivity (Wi-Fi & 4G) to enable real-time visual assistance. Meanwhile, the smart vision system features ultrasonic and IR sensors designed to detect objects in proximity and notify the user through vibrations. Seamless synchronization between the devices is achieved via Bluetooth connectivity, ensuring coordinated operation. The assistive device provides audible signals through earphones, enhancing usability for visually impaired individuals. Leveraging advanced Computer Vision techniques supported by OpenCV and Google Cloud Vision API, this research aims to deliver comprehensive support to the visually impaired community while ensuring security and reliability of the smart assistive device.
