The security of instant messaging has become a major worry as it has evolved. A secure chat system is readily available, allowing for communication with people almost anywhere in the world. This paper discusses security concerns with instant messaging. This paper provides a brief introduction to instant messaging (IM) and the eXtensible messaging and presence protocol (XMPP). This study also looks at the XMPP technologies and specifications and identifies serious security vulnerabilities in currently operating public chat servers.
