An Expert System in AI is software designed to mimic a human expert's decision-making abilities by applying logic to a vast knowledge base. It provides recommendations or decisions similar to those of professionals in fields like medicine, law, or engineering. The system consists of a knowledge base with domain-specific information and an inference engine that applies rules, often through “if-then” logic, to draw conclusions. Its strengths include efficient, continuous analysis and reliable advice, free from human fatigue or error, especially when expertise is scarce, such as in medical diagnoses. The system also allows non-experts to input queries via a user interface, offering real-time support based on predefined knowledge. Some systems include explanation features to clarify decision-making processes.
