Human Factors Engineering-as-a-Service in Cybersecurity

Calvin Nobles, Anuradha Rangarajan, Darrell Norman Burrell · 2025

Human Factors Engineering as a Service (HFEaaS) provides a human-centered framework for enhancing cybersecurity by addressing cognitive, psychological, and behavioral interactions with security systems. By prioritizing usability and cognitive alignment, HFEaaS reduces complexity, minimizes human error, and strengthens resilience against cyber threats. Its implementation involves four phases: (a) assessment, identifying performance bottlenecks through usability audits; customization, (b) designing bespoke solutions to reduce cognitive load and errors; (c) deployment, integrating adaptive interfaces, training, and error-resistant designs; and (d) scaling and iteration, refining solutions through analytics and feedback. This continuous improvement cycle enhances cybersecurity defenses and aligns with high-reliability operations by embedding structured processes and shared knowledge. Future research should explore predictive behavioral analytics, optimal automation, and organizational readiness to further support HFEaaS adoption.
