Edge Computing in IoT: Empowering the Internet of Things with Cloud Power for Intelligent Applications
Debosree Ghosh, Soumya Baidya, Animesh Sardar · 2025
Edge computing is transforming the Internet of Things (IoT) by giving users access to the power of cloud computing. Traditional cloud architectures fail to manage real-time data from IoT devices, resulting in latency, bandwidth constraints, and privacy concerns. Edge computing enables IoT to leverage the power of the cloud, allowing smarter applications that require greater responsiveness and efficiency. Edge computing reduces latency and the distance between IoT devices by placing computing resources closer to them. This symbiotic link between edge devices and the cloud enables real-time data analysis, traffic control, public service delivery, improved industrial production efficiency, continuous patient monitoring in healthcare, and cloud-based advanced analytics. However, the distributed nature of edge and cloud computing raises security and privacy concerns.
