“Artificial intelligence” and “machine learning” have grown in prominence over the past 10 years in various industries, especially information systems. In both academia and business, the two phrases are still occasionally used synonymously, sometimes with distinct implications. In this article, we aim to define the relationship between these concepts. Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to a machine or computer program’s capacity for thinking, learning, and taking action. A subfield of computer science, specifically within the science and information technology department’s computers division, but also in many other sectors, AI is a crucial and popular component. AI applications have benefited individuals in various ways. Machine learning and other AI-related technologies have dramatically increased function quality and efficiency. The appearance of academic and non-academic papers is one of the many societal aspects AI applications significantly impact. We evaluate the relevant research and construct a conceptual framework to define the significance of machine learning in the development of (artificial) intelligent beings. Additionally, we recommend a standard typology for AI-based information systems. We propose an update to a more thorough understanding of the nature of both concepts and greater terminological clarity and direction as a starting point for interdisciplinary conversations in future research.
