What is the role of linguistics in computing? What is natural language processing, and what types of sociolinguistic challenges do researchers face? Why are our different ways of speaking an issue when it comes to computational tools such as machine translation, speech synthesis and speech recognition, even when we speak the same language? What types of solutions are utilised in the face of these problems? Conversely, how can computational methods be used to solve problems in sociolinguistics? And how does sociolinguistics feature in online communication across the digital sphere? This chapter addresses some of the more pertinent sociolinguistic issues of modern tech.
