Military operations require effective communication, which includes text, telemetry, phone, and video communications for quick information exchange. Although they are uncommon in civil networks, low data speeds, fragmented networks, and potentially substantial packet loss are problems that tactical networks must deal with. This article presents the development of a prototype middleware, collaboratively created with the client, to serve as an application programming interface (API) facilitating networking applications’ connectivity across sockets. The outcome is a Python module designed to seamlessly replace the conventional socket library, offering plug-and-play functionality for easy integration into existing services. Through thorough examination, testing, and customization for specific emulated network conditions, the solution demonstrates improved performance, particularly in low-bandwidth scenarios. Despite remaining challenges to be addressed for the middleware’s real-world viability, our efforts signify progress in addressing the connectivity challenges encountered in tactical military networks.
