Optimizing RIS Block Selection for Power Consumption

Ishaan Sharma, Rohit Vishal Kumar, Sumit J. Darak · 2025

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have gained significant attention as a revolutionary technology for future wireless networks. By actively controlling and shaping the wireless environment, RISs enhance communication performance and are considered a key enabler for next-generation network advancements. In multi-RIS-aided communication, a RIS block with elements from one or more RIS is selected to ensure reliable, high-throughput transmission. This letter investigates the effect of different block sizes M in multi-RIS-assisted communication systems, in which M sub-blocks make up each RIS block. A novel multiarmed bandit (MAB) framework is proposed to learn and select the optimal RIS block size using focused exploration. The study highlights the importance of optimizing M to balance performance and energy efficiency, emphasizing that careful selection of M is crucial for achieving optimal trade-offs in practical applications.
