The nutritional needs of hair have garnered attention not only in Sri Lanka but also worldwide, reflecting the integral role of hair health in personal grooming and self-esteem. Traditional Indian medicine has long extolled the virtues of herbal remedies in supporting scalp health and addressing various hair concerns. Herbal-based hair oils, enriched with bioactive ingredients sourced from medicinal herbs such as coconut oil, keekiridiya, amla, savandara, aloe vera, curry leaves, hibiscus, fenugreek, black cumin, and onion, have emerged as favored formulations for preventing hair problems and promoting robust hair growth. This review underscores the importance of these essential constituents, providing a comprehensive overview of their historical significance and potential health benefits in the context of herbal hair oils. With their diverse pharmacological properties, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hair-growth-promoting effects, these herbal ingredients work synergistically to fortify hair shafts, nourish hair follicles, and provide essential moisture for scalp health. Furthermore, the formulation of herbal hair oils considers the complex structure of human hair and the dynamic nature of hair follicles, ensuring optimal delivery of bioactive components to the intended sites.
