With the development and application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), privacy protection issues are becoming increasingly prominent but are not well studied. In this paper, we introduce differential privacy to the routing of the WSN, study the location-based routing protocol: Geographic and Energy-Aware Routing (GEAR), and propose an improved Differentially Private GEAR (DP-GEAR) protocol via the exponential mechanism to protect the geographic routing privacy of WSN. Theoretical results show that our proposed DP-GEAR protocol guarantees ε-Differential Privacy (ε-DP) and experimental results show that the routing performance of DP-GEAR is similar to the traditional GEAR protocol, with more balanced energy consumption, which means that the privacy enhancement does not come at the expense of the routing performance.
