BDAPS: Blockchain Decentralized Approach for Privacy-Preserving and Security in IoT Framework

Md Kamran Hussin Chowdhury, Shah Muhammad Imtiyaj Uddin, Moon-Il Joo, Hee Cheol Kim · 2024

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed how devices interconnect and communicate, leading to substantial progress across various sectors. However, this increased interconnectivity introduces significant privacy and security challenges. This paper proposes BDAPS, a blockchain-based decentralized framework to enhance privacy and security within IoT ecosystems. Our approach leverages blockchain-based Interplanetary File Systems (BIFS) and Hyperledger Fabric to provide a secure, scalable, and tamper-resistant storage solution. Additionally, Ethereum Smart Contracts (EC) are employed to ensure data privacy and safeguard IoT environments. The experimental evaluation, particularly the cost and security assessment of Ethereum Smart Contracts, reveals that while blockchain offers promising advantages, further refinement or exploration of alternative blockchain implementations may be required to optimize security and cost-efficiency in IoT environments.
