Introduction to the Auditory Processing System

Kimberly A. Boynton, Darah J. Regal · 2025

Auditory processing, interwoven with aspects of speech, language, and literacy, impacts daily functional interactions, including academic, work, and social aspects of life. During the early childhood years, young children begin to follow directions, maintain attention to auditory information, and develop auditory listening skills, which are important for future reading, writing, oral language, and comprehension. We need to emphasize the opportunities, within routines and daily interactions, that parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators have to support the development of these auditory skills beginning early in a child&s;s life. The introductory chapter will serve as a foundation for understanding the structure and function of the auditory system as it relates to auditory and language processing. The chapter will outline basic anatomical and physiological components of the systems in accessible ways for readers, without a need for significant prior knowledge in this area of study. Information will be provided to build a framework for outlining the specific functions of the auditory system as it relates to language and literacy. Additionally, readers will be invited to build an understanding of the complexity of the auditory system and identify the importance of providing robust auditory learning and interaction opportunities during the early childhood years to support future speech, language, literacy, and communication development and learning.
