The NTFS File System

The New Technology File System (NTFS) is the standard file system found on the C: drive in all Windows systems since Windows NT. As the name suggests this was a very modern file system in its day. NTFS allowed for extent-based storage with larger addresses than found in previous file systems. It also allowed for alternate data streams and contained much larger quantities of metadata than previous file systems. This meant that timestamps had 100 ns granularity. This file system is one of the most commonly encountered file systems in desktop and laptop devices.
