Urban Aircraft Path Planning in Wind Fields

Christopher J. Milcsik, Eric N. Johnson, Thanakorn Khamvilai · 2025

What are the effects of wind on the planning of the path when creating a path based on distance, time, and energy? For an Unmanned Aerial System, this question can be answered by conducting Monte Carlo simulations. By repeating this over various environments and constraint weights; a Pareto Frontier surface can be created, which can be used to determine two conclusions. The first being the effect of parameter weights on path generation. The second conclusion involves relating the environment’s size and complexity, to how it impacts path generation when considering wind. Due to the existence of parameter weight research, it will be possible to draw a conclusion about the impact of environmental complexity on path generation. At some Environmental Scale Factor, there will be an environment where its size and complexity will make a flat Pareto Frontier surface, due to the parameter weights having a negligible effect on creating the path.
