Inter-integrated circuit (I2C) is one of the efficient protocols for short-distance, low-speed serial communication between microcontrollers and their peripherals. However, I2C poses challenges due to bus arbitration, increased capacitance, and addressing complexity, especially over longer distances. These factors can lead to signal degradation, timing issues, and increased power consumption. This paper introduces an Asynchronous I2C (AI2C) protocol to address these limitations. Comparing synchronous and AI2C, this study highlights the performance of AI2C in terms of signal integrity, data rate, and power consumption over extended distances. The paper also describes its design considerations, hardware modifications, and the implementation of robust error-checking mechanisms. AI2C enhances industrial and automotive applications, offering improved flexibility and scalability for embedded systems.
