LatinX Intergenerational Bendiciones Framework for Student Success
Nichole Margarita Garcia · 2025
This chapter introduces the LatinX Intergenerational Bendiciones Framework for Student Success , a culturally responsive framework that re-envisions how academic achievement and student success are defined for LatinX students in higher education. Drawing from a counter-story on Felix, an undocumented Bolivian student, the chapter examines the impacts of anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) legislation, white supremacy, and racism on LatinX students educational pathways. It demonstrates how white supremacy, racism, and other forms of systematic oppression continue to shape their experiences, while offering resistance strategies these students employ to challenge oppression. The chapter critiques traditional definitions of success, which are grounded in the characteristics of white supremacy culture and introduces the concept of bendiciones (blessings)the intergenerational wisdom, cultural affirmation, and community resilience that support LatinX students in their educational pathways. In centering intergenerational collective milestones rather than individual achievement, the framework shifts the focus to the shared cultural and familial bonds that sustain LatinX students. The chapter concludes by urging institutions to adopt anti-racist practices and recognize the value of family and community in cultivating LatinX student academic achievement and success.
