Conventional neutral point clamped (NPC) converter topology has poor dc-link voltage utilization with a low voltage gain of 0.5Vdc. A three-level improved NPC (3L-INPC) topology has been proposed in this letter which has enhanced the utilization of dc-link by a factor of two while using the same number of power semiconductor devices as the conventional three-level NPC. Additionally, two switched-capacitors of half the input voltage rating have been used with lower values of capacitance. An in-depth comparative analysis with the other three level three-phase inverters has been presented. The experimental test results for 1 kW laboratory setup have been reported with a variety of different operational parameters. Based on the findings, the proposed 3L-INPC inverter could serve as a viable replacement for conventional 3-level inverters in numerous low and medium-voltage applications.
