The video monitor system has been widely used in power systems, and with the rapid growth of video data, it poses enormous challenges for data storage and transmission. In response to the demand for efficient storage of video data in the power system, this paper first reviews traditional video data compression methods. In response to the inherent low information density feature of surveillance videos, this paper focuses on background compression based on background modeling and foreground encoding based on target structured expression. By using background modeling and structured representation of foreground targets, the compression efficiency of surveillance videos can be effectively improved, saving more storage space for power system video data.
