Emergence of cloud computing has gained huge attraction from stakeholders because of its powerful storage and processing capabilities. It has dispensed the necessity for maintaining the infrastructure locally. While it offers numerous benefits, it also comes with its own set of drawbacks like data privacy and security threats. Once the data is uploaded by the user to cloud storage the direct control over their data cannot be assured. Hence to ensure the data integrity proper data auditing schemes are necessary. Some schemes employ Third-party auditors (TPA) while others do not. But TPAs are not always reliable. This paper explores several blockchain techniques and schemes that overcomes these problems. The major focus of this review article is to give a critical analysis on existing auditing methods and simulation tools for its implementation by the different contributors in the field of Cloud data security. Further, various performance metrics from the contributions are analyzed. This review aims at delivering a detailed overview of the various security metrics through blockchain based auditing schemes in order to secure the cloud data storage. Finally, we explore some open issues and describe open research directions for future investigations.
