Monitor unit (MU) calculation for proton beam is an important aspect of proton therapy that relates the dose in patients to the dose in the calibration condition. This chapter provides a brief overview of the general methodology for MU formalisms used for both the broad beam (either passive scattering or uniform scanning) and pencil-beam scanning (PBS) beam. Special emphasis is placed on the pencil-beam model-based and GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo formalisms for PBS beam. The beam data required for MU calculation is discussed, followed by a discussion on the agreements between measurements and dose/MU calculation.
