Energy Consumption Comparison of NB-IoT Applications Protocols

Juan Navarro, Pablo J. Bertrand, Andrés Seré, Leonardo Steinfeld · 2024

This study presents a comprehensive methodology along with hardware and software designed to quantify energy consumption in all communication operations of the BG96 module connected to the NB-IoT network, using MQTT, TCP, UDP, and LwM2M communication protocols. The results of these measurements are provided, highlighting that UDP transmission proves to be the least power consuming option. Meanwhile, considering cost-effectiveness, the MQTT protocol prevails as the best alternative. This analysis contributes to the understanding of how to optimize energy consumption in Internet of Things applications using the BG96 module.
