Added texts and authorship
Stefano Resconi · 2025
This chapter intends to show how Medieval Romance literary texts may be repurposed by integrating them into the blank spaces of an otherwise complete manuscript. After identifying the historical and literary causes that commonly lead to this unique form of writing, the analysis focuses on the various interactions created by an added text that engages with the existing content of the manuscript, and also includes the cases in which blank spaces are exploited by authors or rewriters to compose their own works. This overview also provides an opportunity to make some observations on other unique writing materials, such as single sheets or rotuli .
