The Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly enhanced global connectivity, introducing novel applications and efficiencies. Nevertheless, this expansion raises substantial security challenges due to the vulnerabilities of IoT devices, making them prone to cyber-attacks and data breaches. This paper examines the potential of blockchain technology, particularly its Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, as a solution to bolster IoT security. We offer an in-depth analysis of PoW, highlighting its security benefits while critically examining concerns related to energy consumption and scalability. Recent advancements, such as lightweight PoW algorithms and hybrid consensus models, aimed at optimizing PoW for IoT applications are explored, demonstrating how these innovations contribute to a more secure and efficient interconnected environment. Our comprehensive review sheds light on the evolving role of PoW in enhancing IoT security, presenting a forward-looking perspective on blockchain’s application in securing IoT ecosystems.
