Use of the Press

The development of the press, broadcasting, and more recently also television, has been so rapid and far-reaching that it is hard to grasp. It is largely by means of these media of mass-communication that we in a way indirectly observe contemporary world affairs. Together with the moving pictures they are to a large extent responsible for forming the image we have of the world in which we live, and we get this image piecemeal and almost imperceptibly. Fortunately, we are here not concerned with the appalling task of discussing the mass-media as molders of attitude and opinion, but merely with the question of what use can be made of the press as source material for research.
